Chapter 14: The BET
Black Entertainment Television, or BET, is a basic cable and satellite television channel which is owned by the BET networks division of Viacom.
Viacom is a massive American global mass media company with interests primarily in cable television and cinema. It is the world’s 6th largest media company in terms of revenue, and stands alongside the likes of Disney, Comcast, Time Warner, CBS and Twenty First Century Fox.
One might think that such a large company would be somewhat concerned about owning what looks like, from all appearances, a totally racist company.
But apparently the folks at Viacom have learned, just like myself, and hopefully you, from this book, that the society in which they exist, and from whom they make their money, has long ago bought into pandering to blacks and the politically-correct mindset of reverse discrimination which allows for there to even be a Black Entertainment Television channel in the first place, while never allowing for a corresponding White Entertainment Television channel to exist.
Programming on the network consists of rap, hip hop, and R &B music, original and acquired television series, and movies released via home video. As of August 2013, just over 91 million, yes million, households in America receive BET.
Black Entertainment Television began on January 25, 1980. BET’s initial programming was built around Nickelodeon, and it wasn’t until 1983 that it became a full-time channel, with a lineup consisting of music videos and reruns of black sitcoms.
BET News was launched in 1988, with anchor Ed Gorden. He later hosted other special programs such as ‘Black Men Speak Out: The Aftermath,’ which related to the 1992 Los Angeles riots, and others along that line including ‘Conversations with Ed Gorden.’
In the 1990’s came programming which consisted primarily of black jazz artists, and a joint venture with Starz movie channel to form a premium channel featuring African American-oriented movies called BET Movies.
BET Walk of Fame awards were created in 1995, and BET hosts an annual charitable Walk of Fame ceremony, where of course black entertainers and artists are honored.
Further, the company established the BET Awards in 2001, for the purpose of honoring the accomplishments of African Americans and other minorities in music, sports, acting, and other achievements for each year. These awards are presented annually on BET.
Many scholars and others within the African American community have argued that BET justifies racism and perpetuates it by effecting the stereotypes of African Americans, which affects the psyche of its younger viewers through bombardment of negative images of African Americans.
The channel was criticized in 2006 for not broadcasting live the funeral of Coretta Scott King, choosing instead to honor Mrs. King with special features broadcast throughout the following days. For failing to broadcast the funeral live as most other networks had done, the National Association of Black Journalists gave BET its Thumbs Down Award. (Wait, we have a group called the National Association of Black Journalists?)
In recent years, the channel has come under criticism, and even protest, for presenting negative stereotypes of
